Becca to sell UCI WorldTour licence
(CS/SH) After weeks of speculation it was confirmed on Wednesday that Trek Bicycle has reached an agreement with Leopard SA to buy its WorldTour licence to form a new team in 2014.
Trek has been a sponsor of the Luxembourg team since 2010 and is now set to run the squad, after RadioShack dropped out as a title sponsor for the coming season.
Which cyclists will make the cut is not yet known; however, Trek aims to keep on board part of the current team, including manager Luca Guercilena. “Trek is currently in negotiations with several risers and will announce the names shortly,” a statement said.
Becca meanwhile commented that he is “proud” to hand the project over to Trek. “Trek has been a very loyal partner over the past three years.” Looking back at the past three years, Becca commented: “In the Summer of 2010 we had a puzzle in our hands. Now, three seasons later, we have a team for which Fabian Cancellara has won some of the biggest races and for which both Schleck brothers stood on the podium in the Tour de France.”
More recently, Becca said he was proud to have contributed to Luxembourg cyclist Bob Jungels launching a successful career. “Our team counts among the most important teams in cycling.”
Trek is now searching for sponsors. “There is a solid foundation. We are looking forward to the future with the new team,” said Trek Vice-President Joe Vadeboncoeur.
Whether Luxembourg cyclists Fränk and Andy Schleck, as well as Laurent Didier and Bob Jungels will continue with the team is not yet known. The sale of the licence marks the end of Luxembourg ownership of a WorldTour team.
The future of the Leopard-Trek continental team remains equally uncertain.
